Assistant lecturer beats 351 in logo contest

PETALING JAYA: He deliberately kept his logo design for Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman's (Utar) 10th anniversary simple but it was by no means a rush job.

Utar assistant lecturer Abdul Malik Ahmad spent a lot of hours doing research to create his logo and his effort paid off his design was the winning entry out of 351 entries.

“I wanted a design that was as simple as possible, yet modern at the same time.

“It certainly was not a quick job as I had to do lots of research on the university's corporate identity to fully understand what the institution stands for and how it should be represented,” said the assistant lecturer from the Faculty of Creative Industries Department of Multimedia Design and Animation.

He received a cash prize of RM2,000 yesterday.

The winning logo will be featured beginning next year in conjunction with the institution's 10th year anniversary celebration on Aug 13.

Presenting the awards to the winners was Utar Council chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, who said the best logo had to demonstrate what Utar had achieved over the past 10 years.

“Ten years is not a long time, and I believe that what we have achieved today could only happen through the hard work of all the staff and supporters of Utar.

“Everything, be it academically or our institution's physical appearance, is a result of the teamwork of everyone involved,” he said.

Dr Ling said he believed the institution would continue to progress.

Runners-up for the competition, Chai Zhen Yan and Chan Leong Kit, received RM1,000 and RM500, respectively.

Chai, a second year Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Advertising student, said he decided to use red in his design because it represented a feeling of celebration.

First year Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Graphic Design and Multimedia student Chan said the colours and design of his logo were similar to the existing logo because he wanted to retain the essence of the original Utar logo.
